This week I had the pleasure of interviewing Alex Holmes. On Friday, Alex will be leading a two part Chakra workshop at Three Queens. Alex will be leading a vinyasa flow class incorporating the chakras in the asana sequence and meditation.
How would you describe the seven chakras in a few sentences?
chakra means "wheel" or "disk" and refers to the vortexes of energy inside us. Each one has a different color, sound, function, and dysfunction that can affect us physically, emotionally and psychologically.
How did you become interested in the chakras system and how did you become originally connect to it?
When i first learned about the chakras i was pretty skeptical... it wasn't until i became more interested in anatomy and saw that there was a physical correlation in our bodies to these wheels of energy that it started to make sense. Also, I've struggled with some stuff in my life that started to make more sense to me after I learned about how certain energies that are related to the chakras can be deficient (or excessive!).
How does your knowledge of the chakras affect your mediation and yoga practice?
I like to envision the element and move like the element as I move through my practice. It makes me feel more connected to nature, which I often forget about cause I hardly leave the city!
What can your students expect to learn from this workshop?
We'll cover the basics of the chakras, and will move through the practice in a way that embodies the elemental nature of the chakras.
