Lovely Ladies of the Three Queens WEX Team

This week I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing some of our members of the Three Queens Yoga WEX Team. These ladies truly are a group of dedicated, committed and enthusiastic yogis who care very deeply about Three Queens. The work exchange program is comprised of 15 men and women who hold down the desk, promote the studio work together to make the studio the best it can be. Here is a little more about these wonderful women:

How did you get involved with the  Work Exchange Team at Three Queens Yoga?
When I moved to Queen Village a friend suggested we go to a workshop at the studio together. I enjoyed it so much I asked if there were any work exchange opportunities and here I am!

What do you love about WEX?
The sense of community at the Three Queens yoga is so fantastic. I love getting to be a part of that community!

Tell me a few things about yourself?
When I'm not at the yoga studio I'm an active volunteer with the Wilma Theater and Planned Parenthood Southeastern PA.

Favorite part of your practice and what you are working towards?
I'd never worked on inversions before coming to Three Queens yoga. Getting into "L" pose felt so hard at first - now I love it! I'm working towards getting that solid and then eventually going for an actual handstand!

How did you get involved with the  Work Exchange Team at Three Queens Yoga?
I loved the classes at Three Queens, and the lovely Mariel took pity on my grad school-related zero income - I began working in exchange for classes, and got even more hooked!

What do you love about WEX?
Of course, the classes are incredible, but what I love most about WEX is the community it offers. When you start WEX, you're instant family, no questions asked.

Tell me a few things about yourself?
Hmmm... I'm a morning person (a rare breed); my favorite food is sea urchin; I will probably hug you when I meet you (barnacle status); I learned to ride a bike last summer (...really); I'm in the super long process of getting my doctorate in Clinical Psychology. My dad is preemptively calling me "Dr. Bear." It's bad.

Favorite part of your practice and what you are working towards?
I love inversions and a good, long forward fold. Working towards looking super fancy and controlled on my way upside down. I'm decidedly not there yet. But getting better!

Cant live without...??
Wine and petting strangers' puppies. And mascara, let's be real.

How did you get involved with the  Work Exchange Team at Three Queens Yoga?
I joined work exchange at Three Queens two and a half years ago when my dear friend Alison invited me to begin practicing at the studio. I've been with the team ever since!

What do you love about WEX?
I spent a great deal of time moving around from city to city, Philly is the first place that I've felt rooted in and a huge part of that stems from my community at Three Queens. It is a pleasure to have such a connected community and a sense of place at 3QY. I love that when I walk in it feels like home.

Tell me a few things about yourself?

I have been a runner my entire life and came to yoga as a way to protect myself from injury. I work in the non-profit sector for an organization that uses community and physical wellness to combat homelessness. My passion, ideology, and drive comes from this sense of place and belonging rooted in holistic wellness and it is an honor to be able to live that out both in my profession and in my small role as a WEXer at Three Queens.

Favorite part of your practice and what you are working towards?

Before I started practicing with Mariel, I couldn't even do a push-up! I love that I am constantly growing in my practice in little ways I never even thought would be accessible. Recently, I've started taking Basics classes again which has been so fantastic because it has reconnected me with the fundamentals of the practice which are always there and can always be refined.

Cant live without...??

Running is something that is incredibly important to me, but i know that it is not sustainable without caring for my body and being smart about my joints and muscles. Without yoga, I would not be able to run and running is something I can't live without (at least currently!)

How did you get involved with the  Work Exchange Team at Three Queens Yoga?
I'd been a student at Three Queens for over a year before joining the Work Exchange Team.  Initially, I joined to make yoga teacher training more affordable.  The work exchange program is an awesome way to reduce the cost of yoga and gain access to an amazing yogi community!

What do you love about WEX?

I love the sense of community I get from the WEX program.  I enjoy learning everyone's names, having conversations and getting to know the awesome Three Queens clientele.  I feel more involved in the Queen Village yoga scene since starting work exchange.  I also learn so much from spending more time around the teachers at the studio.

Tell me a few things about yourself?
I prefer to be barefoot, love plants and have 59 first cousins!

Favorite part of your practice and what you are working towards?
I love any pose that opens my hips and shoulders.  Lately, I've been working on bringing more attention to my core and not sinking into my lower back.

Cant live without…??
Green tea and bananas :)
